CASE STUDY: JOHN MARK MCMILLAN - “Deep Magic”
We’d worked with and alongside John Mark for many years, so when we got the email asking if we could produce some visuals and a pair of music videos for an upcoming release, we knew the music and the partnership could inspire something special.
One sunny spring afternoon a few days later we went into the garden and brainstormed among the azaleas.
We hoped to shoot two high-quality music videos that would buck trends and actually say something that might be worth a damn, while delivering high-end production value. That, and, if we could snipe some social media content and a lyric video or two in the process, even better.
The obstacles were obvious and familiar: time and money.
Advantage number four: by building one world in which both songs could live (and not two separate videos, i.e., the traditional model), we’d be able to streamline and maximize our locations, talent, days on set, scriptwriting, prep, and post schedules. Essentially we’d be executing two music videos, two lyric videos, and a ton of social content simultaneously.
Well, enough foreshadowing: John Mark embraced the concept, and we think the film that resulted is a truly special experience.
We were able to capture both stories, both lyric videos, and an ocean of stills, BTS, cutdowns, makings-of, VFX breakdowns and extra scenes within the budget and timeline the label had hoped for. And as each piece of content debuted, we noticed a group of John Mark’s more dedicated fans really were following the breadcrumbs.
We all know audiences are smart; well, this one quickly connected the dots between the story elements and dove deep into the lore of the world we had built. With each new release, we saw excited comments connecting it to what had come before.
You simply cannot beg, buy, coerce, cajole, advertise or astroturf that kind of genuine audience engagement.
We believe content ecosystems absolutely ARE the future of this industry. We can’t wait for the next spring afternoon we spend among the fragile new azalea blooms, sketching the outline of a whole world of characters to meet and stories to tell.

Given unlimited time and unlimited money, pretty much any artist partnered with pretty much any production company could shoot a nice-looking video. It is, of course, what you do with the resources you’ve got that counts.
Right away we felt that building a content ecosystem around these two songs (and the surrounding album) would max out the bang for buck ratio - and the audience engagement per item of content ratio, too, but more on that later. We proposed shooting a hybrid documentary/narrative double-feature, in which the two songs would play back to back as the first and second parts in one overarching story.
Advantage number one to this scheme: the videos could be split up and released on their own, or stitched together and premiered as a double bill, or - better yet - both.
Advantage number two: doc is cheaper than narrative, but since the real world hasn’t been prelit or set-decked it often looks cheap. Here, by combining the two, we hoped we could elevate the documentary elements by implying they belonged to a larger, fictional world.
Advantage number three: by building a conceptual world, each piece of our content ecosystem would point the audience to all the others, like a non-linear trail of breadcrumbs. There would be no “beginning” or “end” to the story; merely a world to explore at one’s own pace and in one’s own chosen order. This is not a small distinction. Audiences very consciously perceive that distinction. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of happening upon a small piece of content that elicits enough curiosity to inspire exploration, only to discover a whole world and a narrative that rewards the effort piece by piece.
